The practice of slavery in the Mediterranean was ended in part by the projection of US power that would come to dominate the world. These wars against the pirates of Northern Africa were the events that caused the USA to first develop its naval power. ![]() This is particularly interesting in that it drew my attention to the two Barbary Wars fought by the USA (amongst others) in the first couple of decades of the 19th Century, the existence of which was previously unknown to me. This fascinating little book is a tract by a US senator and leading abolitionist, first published in 1853, before the US Civil War, with the clear intent of shaming the southern slave states of the US by drawing uncomfortable parallels between them and the Barbary States of Northern Africa. ![]()
